ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Acoustic wave

An acoustic wave is like a sound that travels through the air or other materials. Think of it like throwing a rock into a pond and seeing the ripples spread out. Those ripples are like acoustic waves.

When something makes a sound, it creates pressure waves that move through the air. These waves have different frequencies and amplitudes, which determine how we perceive the sound. Just like how a high-pitched scream sounds different than a low-pitched rumble.

When these sound waves hit our ears, they vibrate tiny hairs in our inner ear, which our brain turns into the sounds we hear.

Acoustic waves can also travel through different materials, like water or even solid objects. This is how submarines and doctors use sonar to see and diagnose things underwater or inside our bodies.

So whether you're talking to your friend or listening to your favorite song, you're experiencing acoustic waves all around you!
