ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lost luggage

Okay kiddo, imagine you’re going on a trip with your family and you pack your favourite toys, clothes and books in a big suitcase. You get to the airport, check in your suitcase and wait for it to be loaded onto the plane.

However, sometimes the suitcase can get lost!!

This could happen for many reasons - maybe the airline staff got confused and sent it to the wrong plane, or it fell off the luggage carts and nobody noticed.

When this happens, the airline tries to find your suitcase and send it to you. They usually have a lost and found department that keeps track of all the suitcases that are reported missing. They use a barcode on your luggage tag to help them know which suitcase belongs to whom.

So if your suitcase is lost, you need to report it to the airline and give them all the information you can about it. This includes the size, colour and any stickers or distinctive features on the suitcase, as well as the flight number and your contact information.

The airline will usually give you a reference number, which you can use to check in with them about your suitcase. They will continue to search for it for up to 30 days, and if they find it they will send it to you.

But if they don’t find it after 30 days, they will usually reimburse you for the lost baggage. It’s very important that you keep a record of what was in the suitcase and how much it was worth, so that you can claim the right amount of money.

So although it’s sad to lose your luggage, the airline will do their best to find it or compensate you for the loss.
