ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lumad

Okay buddy, let me explain "lumad" to you! Lumad is a term used to describe the indigenous peoples of the southern Philippines. These are people who have lived in those areas for a very long time, even before the Philippines was colonized by the Spanish.

They have their own unique cultures, traditions, and languages that have been passed down from generation to generation. They also have a very strong connection to the land and nature, and believe that they are the custodians of the environment. They rely on agriculture and hunting and gathering for their livelihood.

Unfortunately, lumad communities are facing many challenges today. There is conflict and violence in their ancestral lands, as various groups compete for control over their territories. Lumad schools and communities are also being militarized, which threatens their safety and well-being.

Despite all these challenges, lumad people are fighting to protect their communities and uphold their rights. We should all support them and learn from their rich cultures and traditions!
