Machair (geography)

Machair is a type of land that you can find in Scotland and Ireland. Imagine you are at the beach and you see some sand dunes. These dunes are like hills made of sand. But on top of these dunes, you see a very special kind of land. Machair is the name we give to this type of land.

Machair is really special because it's made from really small pieces of rocks, shells, and sand. These special ingredients are really good at collecting water, and they help plants grow really well. Because of this, machair is home to lots of different plants and animals that you might not find anywhere else.

One really important thing about machair is that it's really fragile. That means we need to be careful not to damage it, or it might disappear forever. So if you ever get the chance to visit a machair, be sure to treat it kindly!
