ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Machine quilting

Machine quilting is like drawing a picture with a pencil, but instead of paper, you're using fabric. The drawing is called a quilt, and it's made up of three layers of fabric: the top, the batting, and the backing.

To start, you need a sewing machine that has a special foot called a quilting foot. This foot helps guide the fabric as you sew and prevents it from bunching up.

You then take the three layers and lay them on top of each other, making sure to smooth out any wrinkles or bumps. You can use pins or basting spray to hold them in place, so they don't move around as you sew.

Next, you choose a design that you want to sew onto the top layer of fabric. This can be as simple or as complicated as you'd like - some people sew straight lines, while others sew intricate patterns or shapes.

As you sew, you follow the design you chose and move the fabric through the machine at a steady pace. This can be a bit tricky at first, but with practice, you'll get better and better at it.

Once you've sewn the entire design, you're left with a beautiful quilt that you can use to keep warm or decorate your home. And the best part? You did it all on a machine!
