Macular hypoplasia is when the part of your eye called the macula doesn't grow the way that it's supposed to. The macula helps you see things clearly in the middle of your vision, like when you look at a book or a TV screen. When someone has macular hypoplasia, their macula is smaller than it should be or it might not work as well as it should, which can make it harder for them to see things in the middle of their vision. It's kind of like having a car with a missing or broken part – it doesn't work as well as it should. Doctors can sometimes diagnose macular hypoplasia by looking at pictures of the back of your eye or by doing special tests to see how well your macula works. While there isn't a cure for macular hypoplasia, some people with it can use special tools like glasses or devices to help them see better.
