ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Manillas

Manillas are little metal bracelets that people in different parts of the world used instead of money a long, long time ago.

Imagine you are at a store and you want to buy a toy, but all you have is a shiny bracelet. The storekeeper might say, "I will give you the toy if you give me that pretty bracelet." So you give them the bracelet and the storekeeper gives you the toy.

Manillas worked kind of like that, but instead of a toy, people would trade manillas for things like food or clothing.

The manillas were made from metals like copper or brass, and they were shaped like a circle or an oval. They usually had designs on them, like patterns or animals or people.

Manillas were used in different parts of the world, including Africa and South America. People made them and used them for many years until they started using money instead.
