Manner of articulation

"Manner of articulation" refers to the way your mouth and throat make different sounds when you speak. Imagine your mouth and throat as different parts of a musical instrument, and each way you make a sound is like using a different part of that instrument to create a different noise.

For example, you can make a sound by pressing your lips together, like blowing out a candle. This is called "bilabial" because it involves two lips. You can also make a sound by sticking your tongue out between your teeth, like when you say "th." This is called "interdental" because it involves your tongue being between your teeth.

There are other ways to make sounds too, like using your voice box to vibrate your vocal cords, or by making a hissing sound as air passes through a small gap in your mouth.

All of these different ways of using your mouth and throat to create sound are called manners of articulation. By combining different manners of articulation, we can make all the different sounds we need to speak and communicate with each other.
