ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Human voice

The human voice is how we make sounds when we talk or sing. It comes from a special part of our body called the larynx, which is also called the voice box.

The larynx has two flaps of skin called vocal cords. When we breathe in and out, our vocal cords are relaxed and open to let air flow easily. But when we want to talk or sing, our vocal cords tighten up and come together, blocking the flow of air.

When we start to push air out of our lungs, the vocal cords vibrate and create sound waves. These sound waves travel up through our throat, out of our mouth, and into the air where someone else can hear them.

The sound we make depends on how fast our vocal cords vibrate and how much space we have in our mouth and throat to shape the sound. That’s why people’s voices can sound very different from each other.

We can change our voice by trying different things with our vocal cords and the way we move our mouth and tongue. We can make our voice higher or lower, louder or quieter, and even make funny sounds like animal noises or silly voices.
