ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Map (mathematics)

Have you ever drawn a picture of the world, or even just of your house or neighborhood? You might have drawn a map! A map is a picture that shows you where things are in a certain place.

In math, a map is also a picture, but it shows you how things are connected or related in a certain way. Let's say you have two lists of things, like fruits and their colors:

- Apples are red
- Bananas are yellow
- Oranges are orange

You could make a map that shows the connection between these two lists:

- Red is connected to apples
- Yellow is connected to bananas
- Orange is connected to oranges

This kind of map is often called a "function" in math. It helps you see how things are related in a certain way, and it can also help you predict what will happen if you change something. For example, if you know that red is connected to apples, and you see a red fruit you've never seen before, you might guess that it's an apple!

So maps in math help us understand how things are related, and they can also help us make predictions. Sometimes people use maps to solve really hard problems, like figuring out the shortest path between two points. Maps might seem like they're just for drawing or coloring, but they're actually really important tools for understanding how the world works!
