Maquiladora

Well, kiddo, a maquiladora is kind of like a big factory where people work to make things that are sold in other countries. It's usually in a place near the border between two countries, like the United States and Mexico.

You know how when we go to the store and we see toys or clothes or gadgets that say "Made in China" or "Made in Vietnam"? Well, a maquiladora is like that, but instead of those countries, it's in Mexico. The workers there make all sorts of things - like cars, electronics, and clothing - and those things get sold in the United States or other parts of the world.

What makes maquiladoras so special is that sometimes the companies that own them can save a lot of money by setting them up in Mexico. That's because the workers there might earn less money than workers in other countries, and the companies can also avoid paying some taxes or import fees.

Of course, there are people who have different opinions about maquiladoras. Some say they create jobs and help the economies of both countries, while others say they can be exploitative or bad for the environment. But no matter what you think about them, maquiladoras have definitely had a big impact on the way things are made and where they come from.
