Okay kiddo, so you know how boys and girls have different body parts and look different, right? Well, before a baby is born, it needs to be decided whether it will be a boy or a girl. This is what we call sex determination.
Now, there are certain parts called chromosomes that help determine whether a baby will be a boy or a girl. Girls have two X chromosomes, while boys have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome.
Here's where moms come in: when a baby is conceived, they get one set of chromosomes from their mom and one from their dad. The dad always gives a Y chromosome if it's a boy, but the mom can give either an X or a Y chromosome.
So, if mom gives an X chromosome, the baby will be a girl. If she gives a Y chromosome, the baby will be a boy.
But, there's some research that suggests that the mom's environment and behavior during pregnancy can also influence the sex determination process. Some studies have found that stress and certain diets can affect the hormones in the mom's body, which can in turn influence the sex of the baby.
However, this is still an area of ongoing research and there's no clear consensus on how much influence maternal factors have on sex determination. In general, it's mostly determined by the chromosomes the baby inherits from their parents. Does that make sense, buddy?
