ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Matthews correlation coefficient

Okay, kiddo, let me tell you about something called "Matthews Correlation Coefficient" or MCC for short. It's something that helps us know how good a medical test is in finding a disease. So let's say a doctor wants to know if you have the flu, they might ask you a bunch of questions like if you have a cough, fever or headache. They might also take a blood sample and test it. After they get all the information, they compare it to what they know flu symptoms are like.

Now, let's pretend there's a new test that helps doctors know if you have the flu or not. The test is not perfect and we need to know how well it works. This is where MCC comes in handy. It helps us know if a test is making correct predictions or not. MCC is like a grade that tells us if the test is good or bad.

To understand MCC, let's play a little game. Imagine you have a secret box which has some bananas and some apples. You can't see inside the box and have to guess what's in it. If your guess is right, you score a point, but if it's wrong, you lose a point. Okay, ready? Close your eyes and guess what's in the box.

Now let's say you guessed that there are apples in the box but when you open it, there are actually bananas. You lose one point for being wrong. But the game continues, and you make a few more guesses. Sometimes you are right, and sometimes you are wrong.

After playing for a while, we count how many times you were right and how many times you were wrong. We use this information to calculate a MCC score which tells us if you were doing better than just guessing random things.

MCC helps us know if the test is better than a random guess, just like our game of guessing what's in the box. If the MCC score is high, it means the test is making correct predictions most of the time. If the MCC score is low, it means the test is not doing so well in detecting the disease.

So well, that’s what MCC is all about, it helps us know how well a test is doing when there is a need to predict something right or wrong, just like guessing what’s inside the secret box!
