ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

May 1958 crisis

The May 1958 crisis was a big argument between grown-ups in a country called France. Some people who had a lot of power in the army and government didn't like the way the leaders were running things. They were upset and wanted to take control themselves.

The grown-ups who ran things didn't agree with them, so there was a lot of shouting and arguing. People couldn't agree on what to do next or who should be in charge. It was like two big teams who wanted to be the boss, but couldn't agree on a game plan.

Things got so bad that people in the government decided to get someone new to be in charge and try to calm things down. They picked a man named Charles de Gaulle who most people thought was a pretty good leader. He came in and started to make some changes to try to make everyone happy.

Eventually, things got better and the grown-ups in France were able to settle down and get back to work. But it all started with a big fight over who should be in charge and how things should be run.
