ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

McDonald v Attorney-General

Okay buddy, let me explain it to you in a way that you can understand.

So, imagine you and your friend are playing and sharing some toys together. Suddenly, your friend takes your favorite toy and refuses to give it back. You feel very sad and angry about that, so you decide to ask your mom to help you get your toy back.

Now, in this situation, you are McDonald, your friend is the Attorney-General, and your mom is a court. McDonald is upset because the Attorney-General took something that belonged to him, which is the job of the court to decide.

So, McDonald went to court to ask the judges to help him get his toy back. But the Attorney-General said that he had the right to take the toy and that he did nothing wrong. The court had to figure out who was right in this case.

Basically, McDonald v Attorney-General is a real court case where McDonald (a person) sued the Attorney-General (a government official) because he believed that the Attorney-General took away his rights. The court had to decide who was right in this situation. This is how our legal system works in order to make sure everyone is treated fairly and justly.
