ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Medical humanities

Medical humanities is like playing doctor with stories, art, and music. When we go to the doctor, they look at our body and try to figure out what is wrong. But medical humanities looks at people and their stories to understand what is going on inside.

Let's imagine a little girl who is feeling sick. A doctor may examine her body and give her medicine to make her feel better. But medical humanities would ask the little girl how she is feeling and why she thinks she became sick. Maybe she is feeling sad because her pet cat died or maybe she is scared of something that happened at school. By understanding her feelings and thoughts, medical humanities can help the little girl feel better in a different way.

Medical humanities also looks at things like art and music to help people feel better. If you go to a hospital or a doctor's office, you may see pictures on the walls or hear music playing. This is because these things can make people feel calm and happy, which can help them heal. Medical humanities uses these things to help people feel better both physically and emotionally.

So, medical humanities is like using stories, art, and music to understand people and help them feel better.
