ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mental health professional

A mental health professional is someone whose job is to help people who are feeling sick in their heads, just like a doctor helps someone who is feeling sick in their bodies. They listen to people who feel sad, angry or scared and try to understand how they are feeling. They ask lots of questions to help figure out what might be causing those feelings, and to help them feel better.

There are different types of mental health professionals, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and counselors. Psychiatrists are like doctors who can give medicine to help people feel better. They can also diagnose mental health problems like depression or anxiety. Psychologists help people learn coping skills and techniques to manage difficult feelings. They also work with people to help them understand how their thoughts and feelings are connected. Social workers help people access resources and support systems, like finding a therapist or support groups in the community, and they work to make sure people feel safe and supported. Counselors help people talk through problems and find ways to overcome challenges.

Overall, mental health professionals work hard to help people feel better when they are not feeling their best. Just like we go to the doctor for a fever, we can also go to a mental health professional for help with our feelings!
