ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Merosity

Okay kiddo, let me explain merosity to you. Merosity is a big word that describes how many parts or segments something has. Let's imagine you have an apple in front of you. The apple is a whole fruit, right? But if you slice the apple, you'll see that it has many segments or parts inside. Each of these segments is a merist.

Merosity is used to describe the number and structure of parts in all sorts of things in the world around us. For example, a flower might have petals that are grouped together in sets of 3, 4, 5 or more. The merosity of that flower is determined by the number of its petals. Some animals have merist body parts too. For instance, a starfish has five merist arms, while a spider has eight merist legs.

So, merosity is really just a fancy way of describing how many parts something has, and how these parts are structured. It helps us understand and classify different things in the world around us, from plants to animals and beyond!
