ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Metabarcoding

Metabarcoding is like being a detective and trying to figure out all the different creatures in a certain area by collecting a small piece of hair from each one of them.

To do this, we use a special tool that can quickly and easily analyze the DNA from all of those pieces of hair at once, like a magic scanner.

Then we can match the different pieces of DNA to known animals and figure out exactly which creatures are living in that area, just from a few hairs!

This is very helpful for scientists who want to study the biodiversity of different areas, or for people who want to learn more about the animals that live in their own backyard.
