Metabolic acidosis

Metabolic acidosis happens when there is too much acid in your body. Your body needs to keep a good balance of acid and a thing called base. This balance helps things work right.

When you have metabolic acidosis, there is too much acid, and not enough base in your body. It can happen because you are breathing too fast (like when you have been running around a lot), because you have too much sugar in your blood, or because your kidneys aren't working the way they should.

When you have metabolic acidosis, you might feel really tired and not want to do anything. You might feel sick to your stomach or throw up. You might even start to breathe really fast or be confused.

Doctors can help you feel better by giving you medicine or doing things to help your body get rid of the extra acid. Sometimes, they might even give you a special drink or a shot to help fix the balance of acid and base in your body.
