ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Meteorite

A meteorite is basically a rock that falls from space and lands on Earth. Imagine you are playing with some stones and one of them suddenly falls from the sky and hits the ground - that stone would be a meteorite.

These rocks come from space and were once part of something bigger. They could be pieces of an asteroid, a planet, or even a moon. When these objects collide or get hit by something, they can break apart and some of the pieces can end up in Earth's atmosphere.

As they fall through the atmosphere, they heat up and start to glow, creating a bright streak of light in the sky which we call a meteor. But if they are big enough and don't completely burn up, they can land on the ground as meteorites.

Some meteorites are very valuable because they can help us learn more about space and the history of our solar system. Scientists study them to find out what they are made of, how old they are, and where they came from.

So remember, a meteorite is a rock from space that falls to Earth and can help us learn about the universe around us.
