ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Meteoroid

Meteoroids are small rocks or debris that float around in space. They are like tiny pieces of space dust, just like the stuff that gathers on top of your furniture at home. These rocks can come from many different places, including the leftovers from asteroid collisions and other space debris.

When meteoroids enter Earth's atmosphere, they start to heat up and burn as they pass through the air. This creates a bright streak of light in the sky that we call a shooting star or meteor. Even though it looks like a star, it's not a star at all!

Most meteoroids burn up completely before they reach the Earth's surface, but some larger ones can make it to the ground. When that happens, we call it a meteorite. Some of these meteorites can be very valuable to scientists who study the origins of our solar system.

So, basically, meteoroids are small space rocks that can create shooting stars when they enter Earth's atmosphere and sometimes land on Earth as meteorites.
