ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Michael Balint

Michael Balint was a doctor who wanted to help other doctors be better at talking with their patients. He believed that doctors needed to be more than just good at diagnosing and treating illnesses, they also needed to understand their patients’ emotions and feelings.

To make this happen, Balint started observing what happened when doctors talked with their patients. He saw that sometimes doctors would just focus on the medical facts and forget to ask how the patient was feeling. This made the patient feel like their doctor wasn't really listening to them or caring about their whole experience.

So Balint came up with a plan. He started holding group meetings for doctors where they could talk about their experiences with patients. They would discuss what went well and what didn't, and learn better ways to communicate with patients. This made doctors better listeners and more understanding of their patients’ emotions and feelings.

Today, many doctors still use Balint’s methods to improve their patient communication skills, which can lead to better diagnoses, treatments, and overall patient satisfaction.
