Microbial biodegradation is the process of tiny organisms, like bacteria and fungi, breaking down organic materials into smaller pieces. The tiny organisms use the organic material as food and energy to grow and reproduce. Over time, the organic material breaks down into simpler substances like carbon dioxide, water and minerals that can be used by other living things. The organic material is 'biodegraded'.
