ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Microphyte

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen those tiny little plants in the water? They are so small that you can barely see them, right? Well, those are called microphytes.

You know how plants can make their own food from sunlight? Microphytes can do that too! They use a process called photosynthesis, which is a fancy word for making food from sunlight.

But there's more! Microphytes are very important because they are the bottom of the food chain in aquatic ecosystems. That means that other animals like fish, shrimp, and even whales, eat microphytes or things that eat microphytes.

So, even though they are very tiny, microphytes are very important for the health of our planet's ecosystems.
