ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mirrors

Mirrors are like magical pieces of glass that can make copies of things without actually printing them. When you look into a mirror, you see a reflection of yourself – it's like your body turned backwards.

The way the mirror works is that it has a special coating on the back, called a "silvering." This coating is super shiny and reflects back anything that's in front of it. When light hits the mirror, some of it goes through the glass and some of it bounces back off the silvering on the back.

So, when you look at a mirror, you're actually seeing a copy of yourself that's made by the light bouncing off of you and then bouncing back off the silvering on the back of the mirror. And it's not just you – anything in front of the mirror will get reflected back, like your toys or your favorite teddy bear.

Mirrors can be all different shapes and sizes, but they all work in basically the same way – by reflecting light back to make copies of things. So when you want to see what you look like, just find a mirror and give it a little wave – you'll be able to see yourself like magic!
