ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mithraic mysteries

Okay, little one, let me explain the Mithraic Mysteries to you!

Long, long time ago (about 2,000 years ago), there was a secret religion called the Mithraic Mysteries. It was very different from other religions because it was only for men!

The Mithraic Mysteries worshipped a god called Mithras, who was very powerful, brave and strong. They believed that Mithras was the protector of the soldiers and that he helped them to win battles.

The Mithraic Mysteries had some secret rituals that only members of the religion knew about. They used to meet in special places called Mithraeums. These were underground temples where they would have ceremonies and feasts together.

One of these rituals was called "the tauroctony." It was a very strange ceremony that included a statue of Mithras slaying a bull. The members of the religion would drink wine, eat bread and cheese, and pretend that they were at the ceremony with Mithras himself.

They also had other rituals, like initiation ceremonies where new members would have to go through some tests to prove that they were loyal to Mithras.

The Mithraic Mysteries was a very popular religion at the time, especially among the soldiers. But, after a while, it started to disappear. Nobody knows for sure why, but some people think it's because the Roman Empire, where the religion originated, became Christian and Christianity became the dominant religion.

But, even though the Mithraic Mysteries isn't around anymore, some people still find it fascinating and interesting. Many historians have been studying the religion for years, trying to understand what it was all about.

So, that's a very simple explanation (like you're five years old) of the Mithraic Mysteries. It was a secret religion only for men, who worshipped a god called Mithras, had secret rituals in underground temples, and disappeared a long time ago!
