ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Modal scope fallacy

Hey kiddo! Do you know what a trick is? It's when someone tries to make you believe something that isn't really true. The modal scope fallacy is like a trick in thinking.

Let's imagine you have a big box of toys at home. You also have a special toy that you love the most. Now, if I say "You don't have any toys except your special one" would that be true? No, it wouldn't because you have a lot of toys in the box.

That's the modal scope fallacy. It's when someone tries to say that something is true for EVERYTHING, but it's not really true.

For example, let's say that someone says "You can't eat anything except pizza tonight", but you know that you have other food in the fridge like sandwiches or pasta. That person is using a modal scope fallacy because they are making it sound like pizza is your only option, but it's not really true.

It's important to be aware of this trick in thinking so that we can make sure we are being honest with ourselves and making good decisions based on all the facts.
