ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Modal share

Modal share is a fancy way of talking about how people travel in different ways. Imagine you and your friends want to get to a party. Some of you might walk or bike, others might take a car or a bus, and some might even ride a skateboard or a scooter. The way you choose to get there is called your "mode of transportation."

Modal share looks at how many people use each mode of transportation in a certain area or for a certain purpose, like commuting to work or getting to school. For example, if a lot of people in a city prefer to drive to work instead of taking a bus or walking, the modal share for cars will be high.

Modal share is important because it tells us how people are moving around and how we can improve transportation systems to make them more efficient and sustainable. By understanding the modal share of an area, we can encourage more people to use environmentally friendly modes of transportation and reduce traffic congestion.
