ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mosaic authorship

Mosaic authorship is the idea that Moses, who was a very important person in many religions like Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, wrote the first five books of the Bible - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers & Deuteronomy, which are also known as the Torah or the Pentateuch.

Now, let's say you want to write a really long storybook with lots of important information that everyone should know. You might write some parts of the story yourself, but you might also ask your friends to help you write bits and pieces of it. In the same way, it is believed that Moses wrote some parts of the first five books of the Bible himself, but some parts were also written by other people who helped him.

However, many scholars today do not agree with the idea of mosaic authorship. They think that the first five books of the Bible were created by many different people over many years, and were later put together to make the Bible we know today. This is called the Documentary Hypothesis, and it is another way of understanding how the Bible came to be.
