ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mother tongue

Your mother tongue is the first language that you learn to speak when you are a baby. This language is usually taught to you by your parents or the people who take care of you when you are young.

Think of it like this: when you are born, you don't know how to talk or communicate with anyone. You can only cry or make little noises to show how you are feeling. But then your parents, who already know how to talk, start speaking to you in their language. They teach you words like "mom" and "dad" and "dog".

As you grow up, you start to use these words too. You learn more and more words, and you start to understand what people are saying to you. Eventually, you start to form your own sentences, and you can talk to other people in your mother tongue.

Your mother tongue is important because it is the language that you know best. It is the language that feels most natural and comfortable to you. When you speak your mother tongue, you can express yourself better and understand others better too. It is like a big part of your identity, because it connects you to your family and your culture.
