Moussaka is like a floppy casserole that's made with layers of delicious ingredients. It usually starts with slices of potatoes that are cooked until they're soft and then put at the bottom of the casserole dish. Then, there's usually a layer of ground meat that's been sautéed with onions and garlic until it's brown and crispy. After that, there might be a layer of sautéed vegetables like peppers and mushrooms, and then a layer of sliced eggplant that's been roasted until it's tender.
Next, the cook will pour a mixture of milk, eggs, and cheese (kind of like the stuff used to make a quiche or a frittata) over the top of everything. This will get bubbly and golden brown in the oven, creating a creamy, cheesy sauce on top of the layers of potatoes, meat, and veggies.
Once the moussaka comes out of the oven, it's usually left to rest for a little while so that it's less hot and easier to eat. When it's time to serve, the moussaka can be cut into pieces and put onto plates like a lasagna. Each bite will be a delicious mix of textures and flavors, with savory meat, earthy veggies, and creamy cheese all together in one forkful. Yum!
