Musical Stones of Skiddaw

The Musical Stones of Skiddaw are a group of rocks that have become famous because they make musical sounds when they are struck or hit together.

Just like when you hit two pieces of wood together and they make a “clap” sound, these rocks make different musical notes depending on which ones you hit and how hard you hit them. It’s like a giant, natural xylophone!

These rocks were formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. They are made of a type of rock called hornfels, which is harder than most other rocks. This is why they can make musical sounds when they are hit together.

People have been playing music with the Skiddaw stones for hundreds of years. The stones were even featured in a famous poem in 1792 by poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Today, visitors can go on a guided tour to see and hear the Musical Stones of Skiddaw for themselves. It’s like going to a natural concert!
