ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mutual insurance

Okay, so let's pretend that you and your friends really like playing with marbles. You each have your own bag of marbles, but sometimes one of you ends up losing a lot of them. That can be really sad and frustrating!

So you decide to start a marble club where you all pool your marbles together. Now, if someone loses some marbles, everyone else can help replace them out of the shared pool. That way, no one is left feeling sad and frustrated.

This is kind of like what mutual insurance is. People come together and pool their money to help each other out if something bad happens. They pay a little bit of money every month or year to be part of the group, and then if someone gets sick or has an accident or something else unexpected happens, the group helps them pay for it.

For example, if someone in the group gets very sick and has to go to the hospital, the group can use the money they've all been paying in to help pay for medical bills. Or if someone's house gets damaged in a storm, the group can chip in to help pay for repairs.

The cool thing about mutual insurance is that it's like everyone having their own marble bag, but they're sharing it with their friends so that no one is left behind if something bad happens.
