ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

National Institute of Standards and Technology

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is an organization that makes sure the things we use every day like phones, computers, and other tools all work correctly and safely. They make sure the measurements used to make these tools are exact, like how long an inch is or how heavy a pound is. They also work to make sure the materials we use, like metals and plastics, are high-quality and safe. They keep everything up to date with the most up-to-date research and science in the world. NIST helps make sure the things we use work well and are safe to use.
