ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Natural semantic metalanguage

Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) is a way of talking about how words and sentences mean things. It is a way of understanding a character's ideas and thoughts really well. NSM helps us communicate better because it gives us lots of words that mean the same thing. These words can help make it easier to understand each other even when we don't use the same language. For example, if I say "I am thirsty," the words "thirsty," "desire," and "hunger" are all NSM words that mean the same thing.
