ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

New religious movements

Religion is like a big book with lots of stories and rules that people try to follow to be good and happy. Sometimes, new groups of people come up with their own ideas about religion, and they create what is called a new religious movement.

Just like when you and your friends play a new game, you might make up new rules or add different things to the game to make it more fun. When a new religious movement starts, they may do things differently than other religions. They might have new rules, new ceremonies, or new beliefs that make their religion unique.

People might choose to join a new religious movement because they like the new ideas and think it can help them feel better or find more meaning in their life. They might also like being part of a new community of people who share the same beliefs.

Sometimes, people don't like new religious movements because they think the new ideas are weird or wrong. They might worry that the new religion is harmful or dangerous. It's important to remember that everyone has the right to their own beliefs, and as long as the beliefs don't harm others or break any laws, people are free to practice their religion however they want.
