Norms are rules or expectations that tell us how to behave in society. They help us all understand what to do, and when, in order to be respectful and act in a way that is accepted by everyone. Think of them like an unwritten rule book that everyone follows – it helps us to know how to act and move around in our lives. In philosophy, norms are seen as guides or principles that people use to decide if something is right or wrong, good or bad. Philosophy asks us to think deeply about why certain norms exist, how they shape behaviors and values, and how they should be followed or changed.
