ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nuclear fission product

Okay kiddo, have you ever played with building blocks or Legos? Imagine that the building block is a tiny, tiny particle called an atom. Atoms are very small, so small that even grown-ups can't see them with their eyes!

Now, sometimes these little atoms can break apart into even smaller pieces, and when that happens, it's called a nuclear fission. Kind of like if you broke apart your big Lego castle into small chunks.

But after the atom breaks apart, it leaves behind some new pieces called nuclear fission products. These new pieces are still really tiny, but they can be different from the original atom.

These nuclear fission products can be a little bit dangerous if there are too many of them in one place, kind of like if you had too many small Lego pieces lying around on the floor - it could be easy to trip over them! That's why grown-ups who work with nuclear energy have to be very careful and keep the nuclear fission products in special containers, so they don't cause any harm.
