ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Numerical value equation

A numerical value equation is a way that grown-ups can write out math problems so they know exactly what numbers to use and what to do with them.

Imagine you have three apples and I have four apples. We can use a numerical value equation to figure out how many apples we have all together. It would look like this:

3 + 4 = 7

The big number 7 tells us that if we put our apples together, we would have 7 apples in total. The plus sign (+) means that we need to add the numbers together to get the answer. The little numbers (3 and 4) were the starting numbers we had.

Numerical value equations can get more complicated when we use lots of different numbers or symbols, but they all work the same way – to help us figure out the answer to a math problem.
