ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Oldest television station

Okay little one, do you know what a television is? It's a box with a screen that shows moving pictures and sound.

Now, a television station is a place that creates and broadcasts those moving pictures and sound through the airwaves to our homes so we can watch TV.

The oldest television station is one that has been around for a really long time. The first television station started in 1928 in the United States. That's almost 100 years ago!

It was called WGY Television and was located in Schenectady, New York. They started broadcasting news, music, and shows on a tiny screen to people who had a special box in their homes called a TV set. But not many people had TV sets back then, so not many people could watch it.

As the years passed, more and more TV stations were built, and they became bigger, better and started broadcasting to more people. But WGY Television, the first one, will always be remembered as the oldest one.

Isn't that cool? We can now watch TV on our phones, tablets, or computers, but it all started with a small station in New York almost 100 years ago.
