ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Opening book

Imagine you have a book with a lot of pages. Each page has a different story on it. Now imagine you want to find a specific story in the book. You would have to look through all the pages until you find the one you're looking for.

An opening book is like a special helper for finding stories in a big book. Instead of having to look through every page, the opening book already has a list of all the stories and what pages they are on. So when you want to find a specific story, you can just look at the opening book and it will tell you exactly which page to go to.

Now, instead of stories in a book, let's think about chess moves. There are a lot of different possible moves in a game of chess, just like there are a lot of different stories in a book. An opening book for chess is like a helper that already has a list of the best moves to start a game with. Instead of having to guess which move to make, you can look at the opening book and it will tell you which moves are most likely to help you win the game.

So basically, an opening book is like a cheat sheet for the beginning of a chess game that helps you make the best moves and gives you a better chance of winning.
