ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Operation Mincemeat

Operation Mincemeat was a super-secret plan during World War II that involved tricking the enemy (Germany) into thinking that the Allies were going to attack a different spot on a map than they really were.

Imagine you and your friends are playing a game of hide and seek. You want to trick your friend who is looking for you into thinking you're hiding in one place, but you're really hiding in another. So you come up with a plan to put some of your clothes and belongings in the place you want your friend to find, to make them think you're there.

That's kind of what Operation Mincemeat was like. The Allies wanted to attack a place called Sicily, but they didn't want Germany to know. So, they found a dead body of a man named Glyndwr Michael, who had died from drinking poison. They dressed him up like a British officer and put some fake documents in his pocket that made it seem like the Allies were going to attack Greece instead of Sicily. Then, they put the dead man on a submarine and let the current take him to the shore of Spain.

When the body was found, the Germans got very excited because they thought they had discovered secret plans for the Allies to attack Greece. They sent troops and resources to Greece to prepare for the attack. Meanwhile, the Allies were able to attack Sicily without Germany knowing. This gave the Allies a huge advantage in the war and helped them win important battles.

So, just like in hide and seek, sometimes it's important to trick the other players into thinking you're in one place when you're really somewhere else. And sometimes, that can help you win.
