ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Oral stage

The oral stage is a stage of development when you are a little baby. At this stage, you learn how to explore the world with your mouth. You put things in your mouth to see what they feel like and taste like. This is because your mouth is your primary way of experiencing the world at this stage.

During this time, you will also learn how to suck, swallow and chew food. It’s very important to learn these skills because you need them to be healthy and grow. You will suck on milk or a bottle, and this will help you develop better muscle control in your mouth.

As you get older and leave this stage, you will start to explore the world using other senses, like your hands and eyes. But the things you learn during the oral stage will stay with you for the rest of your life.
