ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Psychosexual development

Psychosexual development is a theory developed by Sigmund Freud that suggests that we develop our personalities in different stages as we grow and move through childhood. Basically, Freud thought that if you don't develop the right skills and attitudes during these different stages, you could experience problems later in life.

To explain it simpler, imagine you're a 5 year old. At this age, you're probably learning how to get along with other people and make friends. This is called the "oral stage" of psychosexual development and it's important because it helps you learn how to communicate and manage your emotions. If you don't learn these skills at this age, you might have trouble later in life with relationships. So it's important to pay attention to developing the right skills in each stage of psychosexual development.
