ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Out of left field

Alright kiddo, have you ever played baseball or watched it on TV? You know how there are different positions on the field where players stand, like the pitcher and the outfielders?

Well, the left field in baseball is the area of the field that’s to the left of the batter, and it’s where one of the outfielders usually stands.

Now, imagine you’re a baseball player and you’re playing in the outfield. You’re just standing there waiting for the batter to hit the ball towards you so you can catch it, but then suddenly the ball comes flying towards you from a completely unexpected direction – from the left field!

That’s what “out of left field” means – something unexpected or surprising that comes from a weird or unexpected place. It’s like you’re expecting one thing to happen, but then something completely different happens from a direction you weren’t even looking at.

Does that make sense, kiddo?
