ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Oxbow

Oxbow is when a river curves or bends, and sometimes the river might cut through the land and create a shortcut. When this happens, the old bent part of the river, which is no longer being used, is called an oxbow. Imagine that you are playing with a piece of spaghetti, and it is curvy, but you cut off one of the ends to make it straight. The cut off spaghetti piece is like an oxbow. In nature, oxbows can provide a new habitat for animals and plants, and they can also give us clues about the history of the land. So, oxbows are like an old copy or a discarded part of the river that has been left behind.
