ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

PRO (linguistics)

Okay, kiddo. So, you know how we have words and sentences that we use to communicate with each other? Well, those words and sentences have rules and patterns that we follow without even realizing it. That's called language.

Now, imagine you want to study all the rules and patterns of language - that's what we call linguistics!

There are many things you can study in linguistics, but one of them is called "pro". Pro is a special kind of word that doesn't give you a lot of information on its own - it's like a little helper that stands in for a bigger, more important word.

For example, let's pretend we're talking about a cat. Instead of saying "the cat climbed the tree," we could say "it climbed the tree". In this case, the word "it" is a pro! It doesn't really tell you anything about the cat, but it helps us focus on the action of climbing the tree.

Pro is kind of like a shortcut that linguists use to talk about language patterns more easily. By studying how we use pro words in different situations, they can learn more about how our brains process language and how we use it to communicate with each other.
