When animals feel something hurting them, it's called pain. Pain is an unpleasant feeling that lets them know something is wrong so that they can protect themselves from harm. Pain can come from many different sources, such as getting hurt, having an illness, or getting stung by an insect. Animals experience pain in the same way that people do: through the nerve endings in their body that sense when something isn't right. Just like people, animals can feel pain when they look at something sharp, or when they get a cut or a burn. Animals react to pain by squealing, yelping, whining, or trying to escape -- all of which are ways of letting whoever might have caused the pain know that it's not okay. Animals feel pain just like people do and it's important to treat animals with care so that they don't get hurt.
