ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Paleosalinity

Paleosalinity is like a time machine that helps scientists understand how salty the water was a long, long time ago. Have you ever tasted salty water at the beach? Well, the level of saltiness can change over time and in different places.

Just like how we have a memory of our past, Earth has a memory too! This memory can be found in rock formations under the ocean or on land. Scientists can study these rocks to learn about the environment and climate of ancient times.

By looking at these rocks, scientists can see how much salt was in the water where the rock was formed. They do this by studying the different minerals that form in the rock, which can only happen if there was salt in the water.

So, paleosalinity is like a way of time-traveling to the past and learning about how salty the ocean was in ancient times!
